Definitions, operations and recommendations

Important informations : please read carefully

1- Dimensions and pressure

All dimensions are in millimeters (mm), all pressures/forces are in Newtons (F1), and all temperatures are in Celcius degrees (C°).

Conversions possible in inches, pounds and farenheits :

  • One inch = 25.4 millimeters
  • One pound = 0.4536 Kilograms
  • One farenheit = C° x 9/5 + 32

2 - Mounting conditions

All gas springs must ABSOLUTELY be mounted in a vertical position with the rod downwards (minimum inclina-tion is 15°).
If you need the rod to be mounted in an upward or horizontal position, please contact us so we can assist you.

  • NO lateral pressure / side loads must be put on the gas springs.
  • When attaching the gas spring, please be careful to remember that you must always allow a vertical play on the axis (0,3 to 0,5 mm), and a horizontal play on each ending (0,5 to 1 mm).
  • Protect the rod in case of particle projections.
  • Avoid using gas springs at their maximum pressure.
  • If you need to paint over the tube, always protect the rod. Do not use solvents to clean the rod.

3 - Mounting precautions

Top
  • Protect rods against shocks, sparks, paint, corrosive products.
  • Do not tighten rods with a vice or pliers without protecting them with protection jaws in lead, aluminum or copper.
  • Maximum temperature in case of use of ultra-violet lights : 80° Celsius.

4 - Working conditions

  • Minimum and maximum allowed working temperatures are -30 ° C to +80 ° C.
  • Maximum rate of 5 cycles per minute.
  • Average durability of 30000 cycles, with an acceptable maximum pressure loss of 15% (durability varies according to stroke length and pressure).
  • Recommended working temperature = +20° C. Nitrogen gas will expand or contract if temperature increases or decreases. These variations result in an output force change of approximately 1% per 3°C.

Example for an F1 of 500 N :

  • at 35 C° => + 5 % = 525 N
  • at 16 C° => -1 2 % = 440 N

5 - Stock conditions

Top
  • Gas springs may be stocked for a maximum period of 3 months in a horizontal position, at a standard room temperature.
  • For a longer time period, or for hot countries, gas springs must be stocked in a vertical position with the rod downwards.

6 - Warranty

  • One year from the date inscribed on the gas spring.
    Example: 01/98 = first week of 1998.
  • Always keep the warranty date clear of any paint.

7 - Neutralization (gas removal)

Top

Gas springs have pressures ranging from 20 to 180 bars, thus, they must be neutralized before being given to scrap merchants.

For your security, always respect the following precautions :

  • ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEGLASSES
  • Lightly tighten the tube in a vice
  • Cut the tube at a right angle in an area ranging from 30 to 35 mm from the end bottom of the tube
  • Use a manual metal saw
  • Put a cloth over the blade

For all BM gas springs, stop sawing when you can hear a whistle.

Gas removal is complete when the rod can be easily hand operated

8 - Margins of tolerance

Top

Force in Newtons   Margin of tolerance
50 < N < 250 + ou - 20 N
250 < N < 750 + ou - 30 N
750 < N + ou - 40 N
